Continuing its exploration of art as a vehicle for social action, SMMoA hosts visionary educators and students from the High School of Recording Arts (HSRA), Minneapolis. Click here for more information.
Gain insight into how HSRA has reached youths failed by traditional institutions, many from the criminal justice system, and empowered them with resources for hopeful futures. HSRA’s Tony Simmons and Mike Conway discussed their revolutionary approach to educating and engaging at-risk youth through the cultivation of talent and integration of hip hop music and culture. Sam Seidel, author of the forthcoming book, Hip Hop Genius, made comments on HSRA’s role in a national movement toward alternative high school education models. Participants had the rare opportunity to hear a performance by the students of HRSA, inspired by the artwork of Elias Sime and the words of director and Sime exhibition co-curator, Peter Sellars.
